Is Podcasting Mainstream?

podcast-icon.jpgRecently the question has come up asking if podcasting is in the mainstream or if it's just something for early adopters. This question seems to come up with church leaders who are considering doing a podcast that's more than just putting their sermons online. They want to know if it's a worth wild medium to use to reach people. Since their time is so precious and they are already so busy is this something worth doing. So, let me try to answer this question with some examples.

Let's start in the world of sports. Henrik Zetterberg, a NHL hockey player for the Detroit Red Wings, has his own podcast called the zcast. This isn't the only hockey podcast out there. Google 'hockey podcast' and you'll find shows like the Faceoff Hockey Show, The End to End Hockey Podcast, and even team specific podcasts like the Canucks Insider podcast.

Let's leave the world of sports and head to the world of parenting. There is no shortage of parenting podcasts and they are specific to the world of parenting. With episodes like Homework Motivation Without Nagging, Decorating Your New Baby's Nursery, and Cafe Mom there seems to be podcasts targeting every niche of the parenting market.

You could take this to many other mainstream markets. Do searches for news podcasts, fashion podcasts, and most other mainstream markets and you'll find podcasts.

So, is podcasting in the mainstream? Yes. Three years ago I would not have responded the same way. In the last three years it has moved from geekie early adopters to the mainstream market.
